Chairman of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MoMAG), Joshua Edmundson, has issued a strong call for enhanced security measures to protect vendors in the wake of a surge in violent attacks.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Edmundson revealed that the lives of many agents have been irreversibly changed after facing violent attacks, with some sustaining injuries and others tragically losing their lives.
“Many of our vendors’ lives have never been the same after some were attacked, injured, and sadly, some lost their lives. These incidents are becoming all too frequent,” Mr. Edmundson said, underscoring the grave concerns facing the MoMo community.
He acknowledged the positive impact mobile money has had on both individuals and the country by providing jobs and relieving the public of the stress of bank visits.
However, he expressed deep concern that these contributions are now at risk due to increasing insecurity.
“Mobile money has come of age and it has significantly helped the government, but now we need government support in ensuring the maximum security of our vendors,” he stated.
He also pointed out the growing fear among mobile money agents, especially after recent high-profile robberies.
One such robbery occurred in Kasoa, where an agent was held at gunpoint and robbed of GH₵30,000. Additionally, an agent was tragically shot on February 13, 2025, at Krofrom in Kumasi, adding to the growing list of alarming incidents.
He therefore urged authorities, including the police, to boost their visibility and collaborate with telecom companies to offer better security training to mobile money agents.
“We need the police to be more visible, and we also need collaboration with telecom operators to provide risk security training for our agents. It’s essential that everyone is aware of the dangers involved,” he said.
As part of MoMAG’s efforts to improve safety, Mr. Edmundson revealed that the association has begun regular orientations for vendors, guiding them on the potential risks of operating in certain areas.
He also announced plans to introduce online training for vendors to ensure they are fully aware of security risks in their environments.
“We want agents to know exactly where they are operating and understand how risky certain locations can be,” he explained.
