The Mole National Park in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah region, has inaugurated the 2024 close season observation in Busunu.

The event, themed “Wildlife: A Heritage we must Conserve,” marks a critical period from August 1st to December 1st, during which capturing or destroying wildlife species is prohibited, except for grass cutters as stipulated by the Wildlife Resources Management Act 2023 (Act 1115).

In his address, the CEO of the Forestry Commission, Sule Nyadia, appealed to residents of the Savannah region to adhere to the rules and regulations during this period.

He expressed gratitude to the chief of Busunu for banning group hunting in the area, emphasizing that forests not only provide timber but also serve as crucial carbon sinks.

He identified deforestation drivers such as bush fires, illegal logging, hunting, and cattle herding, and stated that law enforcement officers from the Forestry Commission would enforce regulations in various communities to protect the environment.

Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazudeen Jibril, in his speech, expressed confidence that with collective efforts and unwavering commitment, conservation goals can be achieved.

He noted that, preserving wildlife is not only a part of natural heritage but also for future generations.

Northern Zone Wildlife Divisional Manager, Joseph Akwasi Binlinla, addressing the media, clarified that during the close season, the only animal permitted for hunting is the grass cutter, and hunters must obtain a license from Wildlife Management.

He appealed to chop bar operators and hunters to secure this permit, warning that those caught without it would face prosecution.

Binlinla also urged the people of the Savannah region to respect the close season for peaceful coexistence between wildlife officials and residents.
