Duran received a pass from Jacob Ramsey and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner with just 11 minutes left on the clock.
Aston Villa took an early lead through Amadou Onana, who marked his debut by heading in Youri Tielemans’ corner after being left unmarked in the box just four minutes into the game.
West Ham equalized before halftime when Matty Cash was penalized for a foul on Tomas Soucek in the box.
Lucas Paqueta converted the resulting penalty with a composed finish, sending goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez the wrong way.
Despite West Ham’s efforts, Duran’s late goal ensured Aston Villa secured the win.
Kudus played the entire match and will be aiming to help West Ham secure their first win of the season when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park next weekend.
