Mohammed Kudus, along with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, have been charged by the English FA following an incident during West Ham’s 4-1 loss to Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
The Ghana international was shown a red card after he was involved in a physical altercation, which included kicking Spurs defender Micky van de Ven and pushing both van de Ven and midfielder Pape Matar Sarr in the face.
Initially, the former Ajax player received a yellow card, but a VAR review led to the decision being upgraded to a red card for violent conduct.
The English FA has charged Kudus for “violent conduct and acting in an improper manner,” specifically for actions taken after the incident that led to his dismissal.
Additionally, Tottenham and West Ham have been charged with failing to control their players during the altercation, accusing both clubs of not preventing “improper, provocative, and violent behaviour” at the time of Kudus’ sending off.
The incident occurred after Kudus, who had earlier put West Ham ahead in the match, was surrounded by players from both teams following his actions. The three parties involved have until Thursday to respond to the charges.
If found guilty, Kudus could face further punishment beyond the automatic three-game suspension that accompanies a red card for violent conduct.
However, former Premier League referee, Mike Dean has speculated that Kudus might be looking at a six-match ban.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Dean said, “When you see the footage back, the first one he could have got sent off for, which hopefully he has. Hopefully, the second one the FA will then take retrospective action, so he’ll get done twice in my opinion because he’s hit two different players in the face on two occasions.”
So far this season, Kudus has made 10 appearances and scored two goals for West Ham.
