The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is calling for an independent investigation into the torture claims against the National Security by the editor of news website Modern Ghana, Emmanuel Ajarfor Abugri.
According to the President of the Association, Affail Monney, the case is centered on the National Security secretariat and therefore his outfit cannot trust the police or national security to do a good job.
He said the police cannot be trusted and therefore an independent probe into the issue would help.

“I think they should go beyond what happened to our journalists. The nature of this particular case is such that we need an independent body to probe the issue. And so we want both the national security and the police to be kicked out because the issue involved them,” he said.
Mr Monney’s comment follows the alleged torturing of Modern Ghana journalists by National Security personnel.
Mr Abugri was detained alongside a fellow journalist, Emmanuel Yeboah Britwum.

The two met with police on Tuesday in the company of their lawyers.
The case has been surrounded by controversy after suggestions that the arrest of the two journalists was tied to the publication of an article that criticised the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah.
Mr Abugri later claimed he was tortured and his digital privacy violated while in National Security custody.

The National Security Council Secretariat has denied the torture claims.
In the event that the torture claims are verified, Mr Monney on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen show opined that the GJA will push for the law [to take its course] “because we are in the dispensation of rule of law and in such dispensations, no one is above the law.”
