Government has directed that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country as well as their Unit Committees, should be dissolved by Monday, October 7.
This is to pave way for the conduct of the upcoming district level elections, according to a circular dated September 9 and emanated from the Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, indicated.
The circular which has been intercepted by JoyNews, further instructed all Regional Ministers to comply by the directive.
This directive, however, excludes the Nkoranza South Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region as well as the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region.
This is because the tenure Assembly members and their Unit Committees who were elected into office and inaugurated on Tuesday, October 5, 2015, ends on Saturday 5th October 2019, in line with Article 2461(i) of the 1992 Constitution.
However, since October 5, is a Saturday, the MMDAs stand dissolved on Monday, October 7, 2019, the said circular indicated.
The district level elections, which is expected to come off on December 17, is to elect new Assembly and Unit Committee members to constitute the successor MMDAs.
Meanwhile, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have been tasked to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the executive and administrative functions of their respective assemblies in line with Article 243(2)B of the 1992 Constitution.
