In a heartfelt appeal, Miss Earth Ghana 2023, Priscilla Asante, has joined many calls on the government to reduce taxes on sanitary pads, highlighting the financial burden it places on disadvantaged girls.
The appeal was made at an event organized by the Viola Ford Fletcher Foundation Ghana Chapter, which distributed essential items such as sanitary pads, underwear, toothpastes, toothbrushes, deodorants, and bras to students at Nungua Methodist School.
Miss Asante emphasized that menstrual cycles are a natural part of life for all girls, regardless of their socio-economic status. “It’s crucial we support those in need, ensuring they have access to essential items like sanitary pads,” she said.
The event aimed to promote menstrual hygiene and alleviate the burden on children who cannot afford these items.
The Member of Parliament for Krowor Constituency, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, highlighted the adverse effects of lacking sanitary pads, including stigmatization and exploitation. “We must ensure girls have access to these basic necessities, free from shame and exploitation,” she urged.
The President of the Viola Ford Fletcher Foundation, Ike Howard shared that for over four years, the foundation has been supporting children, driven by the belief that children are the future and that health is wealth.
He also urged Ghanaians to be mindful of the environment and to protect it for future generations.
Miss Earth representatives from across Africa and Europe attended the event notable among them are representatives from Zimbabwe, Namibia, Ethiopia, Romania, Kenya, England, and Liberia, united in their commitment to promoting proper hygiene and a safer environment for all.
