Minority urges Justice Minister-designate to investigate post-election disturbances

-

The Minority in Parliament has called on Justice Minister-Designate, Dominic Ayine, to ensure that all individuals involved in post-electoral disturbances are thoroughly investigated and held accountable for their actions.

This appeal was made during the vetting of President Mahama’s ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed deep concern over the threat such incidents pose to Ghana’s democratic principles and stability.

In his remarks, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of addressing the violence that followed the December 7, 2024, general elections.

He stressed that those responsible for instigating or participating in these acts must face justice to uphold the integrity of the nation’s democracy.

“The disturbing videos circulating highlight the grave threats these actions pose to our democracy. If confirmed, the Attorney General nominee must ensure thorough investigations and accountability for these violations. No crime committed in pursuit of political power should go unpunished,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin’s concerns were driven by reports and videos showing violent incidents, including attacks on government facilities.

He urged the nominee to ensure a fair and impartial judicial process, prosecuting offenders regardless of their political affiliations.

The Minority Leader underscored the urgency of protecting Ghana’s democratic values through decisive legal action and called for justice to deter future occurrences.
