The Minority in Parliament has condemned the attempted arrest of Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, by officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Wednesday afternoon, calling the action unlawful and politically motivated.
Addressing journalists, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that the caucus stands firmly behind Rev. Fordjour to protect him from what they consider harassment and intimidation.
He also denounced the move as an attack on parliamentary oversight and an effort to suppress voices raising concerns about national security and accountability.
The incident occurred at Rev. Fordjour’s residence in Spintex following allegations regarding two suspicious flights that allegedly landed at Kotoka International Airport, carrying drugs and cash.
In response to the reports of his residence being under siege, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua rallied party members to show solidarity with the embattled MP.
The Minority, who gathered at Rev. Fordjour’s residence, emphasized that the state operatives lacked a warrant for his arrest, raising further concerns.
According to the Minority, no formal charges or warrants were presented during the attempted arrest, deepening suspicions of political interference.
Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the Minority’s commitment to defending democratic principles and urged the public to remain vigilant and support efforts to uphold the rule of law.
The Minority has called for a full explanation from the NIB and announced plans to file an official complaint with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, seeking intervention to prevent future attempts to target MPs without due process.
