The Minority in Parliament has donated GHS200,000 to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto Market in Accra.
The fire, which gutted portions of the popular market on January 2, 2025, destroyed goods and property, leaving many traders counting their losses.
During a visit to the scene on Tuesday, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who led the delegation, urged the government to activate the Contingency Fund to provide additional support to victims.
“We appeal to the government to come to your aid. We recently passed the budget, and we know funds are available to support citizens in times of crisis,” Afenyo-Markin said.
He further called on financial institutions to ease the burden on affected traders by reviewing and reducing interest rates on loans.
“This GHS200,000 is a modest contribution from us—the mighty Minority—to support you in this difficult time,” he added.
