Minority demands update from National Security on seized dollars, suspected gold bars

The Minority in Parliament is demanding full accountability from National Security, regarding the dollars and suspected gold bars that were seized earlier this year.

Assin South Member of Parliament(MP) and Ranking Member on the Defence & Interior Committee, John Ntim Fordjour made the call at a press conference.

“This operation has attracted significant media attention. The public has a right to know how much was seized and the full scope of the operation,” he stated.

In February 2025, the National Security conducted a major operation, seizing a substantial yet unspecified amount of U.S. dollars and Ghana cedis, including counterfeit notes, concealed in twelve 20-foot shipping containers.

The containers were traced to a warehouse in Sapeiman, Ga South Municipality, where a special operation was launched following a tip-off.

According to the Rev. Fordjour, the operation is estimated to involve billions of dollars, was widely reported by various media outlets nationwide.

“We, the Mighty Minority, demand transparency and accountability,” Rev. Fordjour continued. “The Ghanaian people have a legitimate question: Does the government intend to divert the 12 containers filled with gold and cash, only to later claim the gold is fake and the cash counterfeit?” he quizzed.

However, there has been no update on the seizure, raising concerns about the government’s handling of the issue.

“It is unacceptable that, after all this time, we still don’t know the exact quantity of gold or the specific amount of cash seized.

“We demand accountability. National Security must provide a clear explanation of the gold bars and cash seized, as well as their intentions for these assets,” he stated.

The caucus has therefore given National Security a two-month deadline to update the public on the progress of the investigation.

“We assure the public that the mighty minority will not rest until a full and transparent account of the situation is provided by the Minister for the Interior,” Rev. Fordjour stated.

Emphasizing the need for transparency, he underscored the potential impact of the discovery on the nation.

“The public’s growing scepticism is entirely understandable,” he remarked. “It is crucial that the government provides a clear and honest account to maintain trust and confidence among the people of Ghana.”

“The Minority caucus’s commitment to ensuring that the government, through the Minister for Interior, provides a clear and transparent account of the investigation’s findings and plans is crucial in maintaining public trust and confidence,” he emphasised.
