New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame, John Darko, has dismissed claims that the Minority Caucus in Parliament is afraid of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team.
He says neither the Minority Caucus nor former government officials have anything to hide from the ORAL team.
“The members of the Minority group who held the press conference are not afraid of any ORAL team,” he stated on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, January 15.
“We are not afraid that anybody will come to us. I also believe that no former government official is afraid of this group.”
Mr. Darko expressed his surprise at the formation of what he described as an “illegal and unconstitutional” committee, claiming its purpose is to gather information on individuals accused of looting state resources.
“I am shocked because we are a country of law. We are a country governed by law. So unless there’s a law backing such activity, we cannot take it for granted,” he said.
The Suame MP stated that everyone, including the President, must act within the confines of the law, saying, “You cannot say that because you are not directly affected, you allow illegality to persist.”
Mr. Darko voiced concerns about potential harassment under the guise of ORAL operations and criticized what he described as unlawful intrusions into the homes of former government officials.
“Now, people are going into the homes of former government officials in the middle of the night, going into their houses, pulling buildings down, taking their vehicles—all in the name of ORAL, something which has no legality,” he stressed.
He argued that Ghana already has established institutions capable of addressing corruption effectively and called on the government to utilize them.
“We have the CID, EOCO, and the Office of the Special Prosecutor. We have all these institutions. If we really are serious about fighting corruption, go to them,” Mr. Darko added.
