Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, has responded to calls by a section of the public to place restrictions on movement of persons within the Obuasi township in the Ashanti region.
But Mr Agyemang-Manu says a lockdown is not “something that we believe is going to work any longer.”
The Health Minister, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, said the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) will soon be at Obuasi with his team and until they are back with an update on the situation, no decision would be taken by his outfit.
The Director-General of GHS should be at Obuasi now but generally the lockdown is not something we believe will work any longer. The lockdown taught us a lot of things and its impact is very severe and so when the GHS team comes back, their report will determine the decisions that ought to be made, and so we must be very careful when talking about a lockdown, he said.

Calls for a lockdown in the Obuasi township, follow the increasing number of coronavirus cases recorded in that part of the country.
Obuasi recorded an alarming jump in Covid-19 cases with 272 new infections, the reason for the high numbers in the Ashanti region, which has so far recorded 667 cases.
On Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the Minister said a lot of the hospitals along with some companies were sewing their own PPEs and so there is a massive sustainable plan for PPEs.
He further mentioned that, health facilities without PPEs should immediately contact the Health Ministry for PPEs delivery.
