Mining leases issued by NPP to be revoked – Mahama

-

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to revoke all mining leases issued for activities in forest reserves during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

This decision is part of the government’s broader strategy to protect Ghana’s natural resources and tackle the environmental degradation linked to illegal and unsustainable mining practices.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 14 Ministers of State on Thursday, January 30, Mahama emphasized the urgency of halting mining operations in forest reserves and enforcing legal measures against offenders.

“Honourable Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, you will be tasked with the duty of safeguarding the environment from harmful galamsey activities and managing our natural resources effectively,” the President stated.

“It shall be the policy of this government to ban the issuance of leases for mining in all forest reserves. We will also move swiftly to revoke all leases issued under the previous government for this purpose,” he added.
