‘Mic On, Barriers Off’: JoyNews documentary explores what media freedom means to persons with disabilities

-

JoyNews is set to premiere its latest Hotline documentary, Mic On, Barriers Off, on Monday, March 17, 2025.

Produced by Emmanuel Dzivenu, the documentary explores how media freedom has become a crucial tool in amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities (PWDs), advocating for their rights, and creating opportunities for them.

However, with increasing attacks on journalists, the very platform that has provided visibility and support for PWDs is now under threat.

Through the personal experiences of Esther Boadu, Isaiah Amada Awuku, and Moses Addae, the documentary highlights real-life transformations made possible through media coverage—ranging from access to education and mobility support to financial aid and housing.

Mic On, Barriers Off also delves into the growing threats to press freedom in Ghana and the potential consequences for vulnerable communities. It sparks critical conversations on disability rights, journalist safety, and the role of a free press in fostering an inclusive society.

The JoyNews Hotline documentary is produced in partnership with the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
