Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, is hopeful that the Supreme Court will soon settle the controversy surrounding the withheld 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kpebu, who is representing over 10,000 affected candidates, disclosed that the two schools he is representing alone account for about 10,500 candidates. In total, over 40,000 candidates have had their results withheld.
“There are many students involved, and even the two schools I’m representing alone have about 10,500 candidates. In total, over 40,000 candidates have had their results withheld. It is our prayer that as we go to court today, Justice Alibaba Abature will rule in our favour because I have faith in this case, which is why we went to court,” he said.
Mr. Kpebu raised concerns that the delay in resolving the matter is jeopardizing the academic futures of the affected candidates.
He noted that many tertiary institutions have already closed their admissions, leaving these students unable to proceed with their university applications. “Legon, for instance, closed its admissions about two weeks ago, so prospective students can no longer gain access. We will plead for a reopening to admit these students,” he appealed.
With the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) being the administrative body, lawyer Kpebu emphasized that proper measures should have been implemented to prevent such situations.
In a related development, frustrated parents and students stormed the Kumasi office of WAEC on Wednesday, demanding the release of the withheld results.
The withheld results have affected over 2,000 students, mostly from T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, leaving them unable to proceed with their university admissions.
Parents revealed that WAEC had sent messages instructing the students to report to the regional office to verify allegations of malpractice during the exams.
However, they are yet to receive any positive outcome to move forward with their children’s education.
