An engineer with the South Tongu Assembly in the Volta Region, identified as Alex, has sustained injuries after being hit by stray bullets allegedly fired by Customs officers.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, around 9:00 pm.
Reports indicate that the officers opened fire on an uncustomed Mercedes-Benz with registration number GC 3361-14, whose driver was evading arrest. The vehicle was being pursued in Sogakope when the officers fired shots, striking its rear windshield.
Alex was hit by two stray bullets and was quickly rushed to Comboni Hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, Alex was waiting by the roadside to board a vehicle when the incident happened.
“A pickup was chasing a car and stopped in front of us, and a few seconds later, we heard gunshots. Before we could realize, a man who was by the roadside waiting to board a vehicle to Accra was hit by the bullets.
“We identified those who fired the shots as Customs officials. They have, however, arrested the uncustomed vehicle they were chasing, but the victim has been rushed to the hospital,” an eyewitness told Accra-based Citi News.
