A man believed to be in his early 60s tragically lost his life after falling from the Lower Volta Bridge on the ECOWAS highway at Sokpoe in the South Tongu District on Monday, October 28, 2024, at approximately 14:00 hours.

The body of the man, yet to be identified, has been deposited at the Sogakope District Hospital Mortuary after residents reported the incident to the Sogakope District Police Command.

Eyewitnesses told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that this was the third such incident they have witnessed in the past three years.

According to them, the deceased alighted at Sokpoe from a commercial motorcycle, walked back to climb the bridge, and jumped into the river.

“We thought he had forgotten something and wanted to go back for it, but he jumped into the river before we could intervene,” an eyewitness named Godwin revealed.

They added that some fishermen who witnessed the incident quickly responded in an attempt to save him, but he was found dead.

Edmund Fingeroo Dickah, the Assembly Member for the Sokpoe Electoral Area, confirmed the incident to the GNA, noting that the deceased was not known in the area. No report of a missing person matching his description has been received.

He mentioned that an unspecified amount of money and a handkerchief were found in the man’s pockets. Eyewitnesses also reported seeing him with a male handbag before he jumped, which was missing when the body was retrieved.

“The deceased wore a blue-black kaftan and a necklace, appearing well-dressed and responsible,” he said.

Mr. Dickah urged the public to provide any information that could help identify the deceased or locate his family.
