‘Mallams’ taking over social media

The emergence of social media has created a safe platform for all manner of social deviants to pull a fast one on others.

Facebook, for instance, is a social network where people with different beliefs, values, morals and ethics connect with each other. So called ”mallams” and other spiritualists have also taken undue advantage of the platform to advance their agenda.

At first, individuals who needed the services of ‘mallams’ could only reach them in obscure places, mostly scary.

However, the trend seems to be changing; most ‘mallams’ are now taking advantage of the boom in social media use.

Persons who spoke to TV3 explained encountering countless friend requests and messages from ‘mallams’ on facebook.

These ‘mallams’ have travelled from the old fashioned ways of doing things, and are expanding through social media especially facebook.

They now boldly display their billboards, market themselves through television, radio and social media.

Although rejection to these requests may be guided by fear, we ask, ‘how’ and ‘why’? But does this influx of ‘mallams’ on various social media outlets indicate that Ghanaians are becoming more technologically inclined?
