Dean of the Law School at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, has described President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to run a lean government as a commendable initiative.
Ahead of the 2024 general elections, Mr. Mahama reiterated his commitment to reducing the size of government by appointing no more than 60 ministers, a move aimed at cutting expenditure, merging ministries, and eliminating waste.
During the Governance Forum held in Accra on October 31, 2024, he emphasized appointing efficient and effective individuals to streamline government operations and reduce redundancies.
While Professor Abotsi acknowledged this as a positive step, he cautioned against the temptation to prioritize compensating political activists over state interests.
He warned that such practices could undermine public trust in the promise of a lean government.
In a post on his X account, Professor Abotsi stated, “The incoming administration has promised a leaner government! That is a positive start. But the tendency to compensate political activists at the expense of the state breaches the constitutional trust. Too many ministers mean overlap and chaos.”
