The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said former President John Mahama was not persuaded by anyone to concede defeat in the 2016 general election.
Theophilus Tetteh Chaie said Mr Mahama will never compromise the democratic dispensation of Ghana just for his selfish interest.

His comment was in reaction to Asantehene’s claim that he persuaded the former President to concede defeat.
Addressing a United Nations General Assembly, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said: “we were able to intervene to persuade the losing candidate to accept his fate and fly both candidates for a quiet encounter to pave the way for a handover.”
But, Mr Chaie on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme, Monday said the assertion is very controversial.

He said Mr Mahama consulted NDC national executives and chiefs including Otumfuo, hence the comment is very strange.
“There was no point Mahama refused to concede defeat in the 2016 general election. He believes in Ghana’s democracy and will not do anything to compromise it,” he added.

Mr Chaie, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, stressed that the NDC still welcomes the wise counsel of Otumfuo in spite of the comment.
“Otumfuo works with us; we have never regretted working with him. We will continue to fall on your wise counsel,” he noted.
