Former President, John Dramani Mahama has committed to strategically investing in the agriculture sector to reposition it as a key driver of accelerated development, particularly in Northern Ghana.
Speaking to the media in Bolgatanga during his 2024 election campaign tour, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer emphasized the importance of sustainable policies that empower farmers to boost productivity while adapting to the changing climate.
“We need to find a way to support farmers that is more sustainable than in the past. Programs like Planting for Food and Jobs have been well-intentioned but lack long-term sustainability,” he stated.
Mr Mahama outlined plans for the next NDC government to provide mechanization services through the flagship Farmer Service Centres program and prioritize agro-processing.
This, he explained, would enable farmers to add value to their raw materials, increasing their income levels.
Highlighting areas like the Fumbisi Valley in the Builsa South District and Yagaba in Mamprugu Moaduri, the former President noted that with sustainable investment and modern technologies, these regions could potentially feed the entire nation.
Mr Mahama also pledged to prioritize the establishment of a college of education specializing in agriculture, particularly in the Builsa and Yagaba areas, should the NDC win the December 7 polls.
He said the institution would train educators to provide agricultural services to farmers.
Mr. Mahama also promised to implement policies that promote the patronage of locally produced crops, encouraging the private sector, government institutions, and school feeding programs to source from local farmers.
