The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has urged calm and restraint among Bawku residents following the resurgence of chieftaincy clashes.
The long-standing conflict resurfaced on Sunday, October 27, 2024, with the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Speaking to supporters in Saboba as part of his Northern regional campaign, Mr. Mahama urged all factions involved to avoid any form of violent provocation.
The former President emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving the conflict.
“Without peace, there cannot be progress. Unfortunately, any time the peace of Ghana is disturbed, it is the NPP government that is in power. Recently, I have been hearing about some things happening in Bawku that appear to be threatening to disturb the peace there.
“I appeal to the people of the Bawku area and all stakeholders involved in what is happening there to exercise patience and restraint. We know that some sinister hands are trying to stoke the fires of ethnic conflict,” he admonished.
Mr. Mahama also pledged his commitment to restoring total peace in Bawku if elected in the December 7 elections.
“They should not allow themselves to be provoked into violence. So, please, the people of the Bawku area, I’m begging you and pleading with you to remain calm, be restrained, and don’t resort to conflict.
“The NDC is coming, and when we do, we will ensure that there’s peace in Bawku and the surrounding areas,” he noted.
