Mahama to restore UGMC management to University of Ghana

-

President-Elect John Mahama has announced plans to return the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana.

The move, he says, is essential to achieving the hospital’s original purpose.

Mahama noted that the UGMC, envisioned under the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, was intended to be managed by a subsidiary of the university to ensure operational efficiency and high standards of care.

However, he lamented that the facility, now under the Ghana Health Service, operates at only 40% of its capacity.

The President-elect noted that it has become urgent to restore the original management structure to reduce the need for Ghanaians to seek medical treatment abroad in countries such as South Africa and India.

He lamented that the Ghana Health Service already has many hospitals under its wings hence cannot manage UGMC as required.

After scaling up operations to 100%, Mahama intends to maximize the facility’s potential to provide advanced healthcare services locally.
