President John Dramani Mahama has announced a reduction in the number of government ministries from 30 to 23 as part of a broader strategy to enhance public service delivery and lower government operational costs.
This decision, revealed in an Executive Instrument issued on January 9, 2025, aligns with one of President Mahama’s key campaign promises to streamline governance and promote a more focused, results-driven administration.
During his election campaign, President Mahama committed to reducing the size of government, aiming to cap the number of ministries at 60 to foster better accountability, cost-efficiency, and streamlined decision-making processes.
The current reduction is part of a broader effort to restructure the country’s governance framework and improve public sector effectiveness.
The official Executive Instrument, dated January 9, 2025, cited section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327) as the legal basis for the adjustment.
The Act grants the President the authority to reorganize government ministries and agencies as necessary to enhance civil service efficiency.
Consequently, some ministries have been merged with others to support these objectives.
