As Ghana joins the global celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his dedication to advancing gender equality, calling for swift action to empower women and girls in all sectors.
In a Facebook post marking the occasion, President Mahama urged Ghanaians to accelerate efforts toward gender parity, emphasizing that women’s empowerment is essential for national development.
“This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, underscores the need for urgent steps to achieve gender equality. Ghana has made notable progress, particularly with the election of its first female Vice President. Let’s build on this achievement,” he stated.
He stressed the importance of prioritizing women’s empowerment in education, business, politics, and leadership, urging collective efforts to create more opportunities for women to excel.
“We must all focus on uplifting women in every aspect of society, from education and business to governance and leadership. Let’s work together to build a Ghana where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential,” he added.
This aligns with the 2025 International Women’s Day theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” which advocates for equal rights and opportunities for all. The year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a pivotal document that has shaped women’s rights policies globally.
Under President Mahama’s leadership, Ghana has made notable strides in gender equality, with the historic appointment of the country’s first female Vice President serving as a significant milestone. However, he believes more work is needed to break barriers and enhance women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.
As part of the IWD celebrations, he encouraged Ghanaians to leverage digital platforms to share impactful stories and messages that promote gender equality. He also urged the public to use the hashtag #ForAllWomenAndGirls to foster dialogue and inspire meaningful change.
His call for action comes as global leaders, policymakers, and organizations are being urged to invest in policies and initiatives that advance women’s rights and promote equal opportunities.
With his administration’s continued push for gender inclusion, President Mahama’s advocacy is expected to influence national discussions on women’s leadership, economic empowerment, and social progress.
