The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has promised a month maternity leave extension if he wins the 2024 elections.

Additionally, Mr Mahama has pledged a week-long paternity leave for fathers, enabling them to assist mothers during this vital.

The former President announced this during the NDC Women Manifesto launch in Kumasi on Monday.

Currently, mothers are entitled to three months’ leave after birth, but Mr Mahama has asserted it is insufficient for the crucial early stages of parenting.

“By the fourth month, when a baby begins to wean, mothers often have to return to work.”

“I will add an extra month to allow mothers to monitor their child’s development before resuming their professional responsibilities,” he pledged.

Meanwhile, Mr Mahama has said fathers must provide proof of marriage to benefit from the paternity leave.

“This policy is for legally married men, ensuring that both parents can take part in caring for the newborn. While mothers will receive four months of maternity leave, fathers will have a week of paternity leave to support their wives and bond with their child,” he explained.
