Mahama promises Property Rights of Spouses Bill

-

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has promised to enact the Property Rights of Spouses Bill when elected president on December 7.

The Bill according to the former President will seek to protect women in marriages.

Mr Mahama announced this during the NDC Women’s Manifesto launch on Monday in the Ashanti region.

“Marriage unites spouses, and in the event of any unfortunate circumstances, properties such as buildings and farmland should be shared equally. No man should have the authority to evict a woman without her receiving her rightful share,” he said.

The NDC flagbearer further hinted at the introduction of a Domestic Workers Bill aimed at protecting vulnerable workers, predominantly women, from mistreatment.

Mr Mahama explained that, this law will ensure protection and accountability for those who exploit domestic workers, putting an end to such abuse

“These people are not fed, [they are] beaten and not cared for properly. This law will protect them so that there will be an end to the abuse of domestic workers. These laws will be there to deal with such people who maltreat domestic workers,” he said.
