Mahama orders promotion of all eligible deputy education directors

President John Mahama has directed the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately promote all eligible education directors.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made this announcement on Thursday, April 24, during the launch of the free sanitary pad initiative.

“One of your major concerns, the president raised to me, is that in his campaign rounds, many of you who are deputy directors of education struggle to move up the ladder to become directors because of the unavailability of office spaces,” he stated.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to give all those deputy directors a legitimate promotion,” Iddrisu added.

The Tamale South MP emphasized that even in the absence of office spaces, the promoted individuals would serve in their new capacities as directors of GES.

This directive comes amid a threat of a nationwide strike by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) by April 30. GNAT has raised concerns over several unresolved issues that continue to adversely affect teachers in the country.

Among the issues, GNAT highlighted the challenges with the implementation of the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS), which was reintroduced by the Public Services Commission (PSC) despite objections from unions.

According to GNAT, the HRMIS has caused significant delays in salary reactivation, with over 800 teachers affected as of December 2024. Some teachers have faced delays ranging from four to 12 months.

Additionally, teachers who have pursued further studies, often self-sponsored, have been denied upgrades upon completion.

Several teachers who were successful in the last promotion exercise but below the rank of Principal Superintendent have also not been upgraded or placed at their correct ranks.
