The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed concern over the growing trend of fake news and the intentional peddling of falsehoods for political advantage or expediency.
Mr. Mahama has accused the Akufo-Addo-led government of investing in spreading lies, which he says must be rejected by Ghanaians.
He raised these concerns while reacting to some social media audios and videos about him containing statements he never uttered during his campaign in the Ashanti Region.
The latest, he indicated, is an audio suggesting that he sent thugs to attack the Asantehene’s convoy in Techiman, which he described as untrue.
He has warned that the country’s progress is hindered by the perpetuation of such false information and must be checked.
Mr. Mahama raised these concerns when he paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday.
Mahama told the Asantehene that such accusations are false and that he will only ask God to judge.
He further expressed optimism about winning the December polls.
“This is worrying, but I believe the good Lord who knows the heart of everyone will be the judge. It is my prayer that on December 7, God, who makes kings, will bring the right leader to correct the wrongs and hardship the NPP has brought on Ghanaians,” he said.
