Information Minister, Fatima Abubakar has said former President John Mahama is becoming a threat to Ghana’s Judiciary and democracy.
In her view, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer gives the impression that his party must win every court case.
In this regard, if Mr. Mahama were to denigrate the judiciary, it would be in bad taste.
Fatima Abubakar made these remarks on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Friday.
“My heart aches, and I feel disappointed when he makes such comments. At this rate, I think he is becoming a threat to Ghana’s democracy. The law is such that everyone gets equal justice. You may not be happy with a court ruling, but you must take it in good faith,” she stated.
This comes after Mr. Mahama accused the Akufo-Addo administration of intentionally undermining independent institutions in Ghana, specifically mentioning the Electoral Commission (EC) and the judiciary.
Speaking at his Good Governance Forum on Thursday, Mahama expressed deep concern over the erosion of institutional integrity and the implications it has for the country’s democracy.
He emphasised that the systematic weakening of these institutions poses a serious threat to good governance and accountability.
However, Madam Abubakar has described the comments as disappointing and not worthy of a statesman and former President.
She cited Mr. Mahama’s allegation that Akufo-Addo was packing the courts with New Patriotic Party (NPP)-inclined judges.
“Judges look at the law and not political colours. The judges Mahama appointed and those he elevated to the high court” she argued.
