Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, believes that the country’s local football league will soon outshine European leagues with the introduction of the 24-hour economy initiative.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, the Bawku Central MP expressed confidence in the transformation of Ghanaian football.
“With the 24-hour economy strategy, football is going to be a major enabler of the 24-hour economy, and very soon we will see it. Very soon, our local league will replace the European leagues,” Mr. Ayariga said.
Despite its rich history in African football, the Ghana Premier League currently faces significant challenges, including the absence of a headline sponsor, a lack of an official television broadcaster, and issues such as hooliganism and match-fixing.
With a new sports minister now in office, there is hope that he will collaborate with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to revamp and strengthen the league.
