Some well-built men believed to be supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have stormed the Techiman office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to sack the staff on duty.

The men reportedly told the workers to go home because there is a new government in place, Joy News Brong Ahafo Regional Correspondent Anas Sabit said.

Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Jibreel Kesse, who was out of the office when the incident happened, said he has lodged a formal complaint with Municipal Chief Executive.

As at 2:55 pm Monday when Joy News got to the office, the main office was opened with the NADMO boss’ computer and other files taken away. The disaster control office is, however, still under lock.

The Techiman incident came hours after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promised to crack the whip on youth groups that will foment dissension in the country.

At the 2017 Ngmayem Festival at Manya Krobo last Friday, the President noted the law will be made to work without fear or favour.

“When you fall foul of the law, you will be dealt with accordingly, and the law enforcement agencies, including the Judiciary, must ensure this is done,” he said.

Sections of Ghanaians have registered their displeasure with the President’s inaction since the start of the attacks in the country.

They claim President Akufo-Addo has made promises in the past to ensure that perpetrators of the crime are punished but nothing has been done.

But Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante is unhappy with the politicisation of the attacks.

He believes the country will be able to deal with the issue if it is discussed dispassionately, adding the time has come for a clear distinction to be made between political activity and criminal activity.

“When people break the law, they should be charged and put before the court [but] if we try to massage it by simply politicising it we are not helping the issue,” Prof Asante told Emefa Ampawu on Joy FM’s Newsnight.

He said the “long arm of the law” must be able to reach the youth who are attacking people.

“These are criminal acts and if the police are not doing their work, they should be held responsible,” he added.
