The government is set to purchase emergency fuel from Nigeria and other sources to avert the looming power crisis locally known as ‘dumsor.’
Yapei-Kusawgu Member of Parliament(MP) John Jinapor disclosed this on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, Wednesday.
The MP stated about 500,000 barrels of light crude oil is currently needed and the order must be placed today, January 8, 2025.
For diesel, he disclosed the remaining quantity can only last for a day alongside the purchase of about 20,800 metric tonnes of HFO for AKSA.
“The Chief of Staff will act accordingly but it must be immediate. We will order light crude oil from Nigeria. We also need diesel and HFO. A plant like AKSA for instance can run on both gas and HFO so we will buy the HFO and store so they use when the need arises.
“Asogli at the moment has zero light crude oil and because it keeps long to come, we are buying diesel temporarily so they can use for now,” he explained.
The former Deputy Energy Minister admitted that there were a lot of procedures involves and may delay the purchase.
However, President John Mahama is currently in talks with some people to bridge the usual delivery.
“We need to be swift so even if we have to jump a cue, we will and once we get that, we will be okay,” he stated.
This comes after Mr Jinapor warned that the country faces a serious energy crisis, as there is currently insufficient fuel in stock for power generation.
According to him, the outgoing Nana-Addo-led government failed to make necessary fuel procurements despite repeated warnings and calls to do so.
Following an emergency meeting with stakeholders in the energy sector on Wednesday, a technical committee has been set up with representatives from all key players.
They are expected to present the roadmap to the government, outlining what needs to be done and how it can be done.
Meanwhile, the new government will require a total of $89.90 million to procure liquid fuel in the absence of natural gas.
