Local govt service workers union distances itself from CLOGSAG strike

-

The Local Government Service Workers’ Union (LGSWU) has dissociated itself from the ongoing strike initiated by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG).

The strike, which began on Thursday, February 20, 2025, is in protest against the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, a move CLOGSAG considers politically motivated.

CLOGSAG’s General Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, has called on the Presidency to revoke Botchway’s appointment, citing a Supreme Court ruling that bars civil servants from engaging in active partisan politics.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, February 21, the LGSWU clarified that it would not participate in the strike, pointing to an ongoing legal case related to the matter.

As a result, the union has directed its members to continue their regular duties.

“For these reasons and upon further consultations by the National Management Committee with all the regional councils, the Local Government Service Workers’ Union has taken a unanimous decision not to join the strike action,” the statement read.
