Head coach of the Black Stars, Avram Grant has urged local-based players to forget about playing for the national team under his tenure as head coach of the team.
Premier League Champions, Wa All Stars goalkeeper, Richard Ofori was the only local player that made the 26 man provisional squad but insisted that he was tasked to select players all over the world and was not asked to reserve a slot for locally based players.
“I was asked to name Ghanaian players for the AFCON but wasn’t asked to name them per the leagues they play. I picked players based on their commitment and desire to play for the country.
“Maybe in the future there will be segmentation in call ups to pick 5 local players, 6 Europeans and etc but not in my time as a coach,” he added.
The team will begin an 11-day training tour in the UAE before travelling to Gabon on January 13 for the competition.
