LIVE UPDATES: Akufo Addo’s investiture as Ghana’s President

Akufo-Addo is officially the President of the Republic of Ghana.

The 21 gun salut by the military took place to welcome the Commander in Chief. This is done by the military as way of showing their allegiance to the new president.

Delievering his inaugural speech after the swearing-in, President Akufo Addo said he will not let Ghanaians down and ever ready to serve in the interest of the nation.

“You Ghanaians make us proud,” she said.

She commended the Electoral Commission and all stakeholders for conducting preaceful, fair and transparent elections.

Congratulated President Mahama for his show of statesmanship and reminded him that he has a lot more to do even out of power.

“Thank you for demonstrating to all that indeed there is life after power,” she said.

Thank you all for making me president and may God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong. 

Our nation will work when the marginalised and catered for and treated with respect.

There will be discipline for all and not just some.

I see exciting times ahead. The rule of all will be apllicable to all and not jsut some.

I assure you who that i will advance my conviction with civility. I will call for responsiblity. this is my solemn pledge.

It is time to dream again. We must create wealth ad restore happiness to our nation. 

He reiterates that his governement will reduce taxes.

Ghana is open for business again, he said

President Akufo-Addo says he will protect the public purse.

He said public service is just that, service, and not an avenue for making money.

Newly elected speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Ocquaye has arrived at the Black Star Square.

Ex President John Dramani Mahama and his wife, Lordina Mahama as well as ex vice president Kwesi Amissah Arthur and his wife, Matilda Amissah Arthur are all present at the grounds.

Former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor together with their spouses are also seated.

Hundreds of people are expected at the Black Star Square for the official investiture of Ghana’s President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Saturday.

The event will feature parades and cultural display performed before the crowd that would be made up of some African heads of state and Presidents from some European countries.

Nana Akufo-Addo will be sworn in by the Chief Justice, Theodora Georgina Wood as required by Ghana’s Constitution. 

President-elects are expected to be sworn in by January 7, a month after the nation’s general elections on December 7.

So far, 15 heads of state have arrived to grace the occasion, among them are presidents from Benin, Egypt, Ethiopia, Zambia, Liberia, Equitorial Guinea, Togo.

There will also be representatives from 13 states across the world in the country to witness Akufo-Addo’s investiture. 

President of Cote d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouatara, who is a special guest to the ceremony arrived about 30 minutes ago.
