Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has appealed to the academic community, urging them to take a more active role in addressing the critical issue of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, in Ghana.
In his speech, Mr Kufuor stressed that while politicians have been at the forefront of discussions on fighting galamsey, their efforts alone are not enough to achieve lasting solutions.
He underscored the need for academic experts to contribute their knowledge, research, and analytical skills to develop more effective, long-term strategies to combat the escalating problem.
Speaking at a special event hosted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), the former President highlighted the urgency of tackling illegal mining, citing its devastating effects on the environment, including the destruction of water bodies, environmental degradation, and the loss of fertile land.
He emphasized that galamsey is not just a political issue but a national challenge that requires a multidisciplinary approach, with academia playing a crucial role.
“The issue of illegal mining and the responsible use of our natural resources must be addressed with critical analysis and urgency to find the sustainable solutions we need,” he stated.
“I therefore urge thought leaders, particularly in academia and institutions like GIMPA, to spearhead discussions that will drive both immediate and long-term solutions to these pressing national challenges,” he added.
