Private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has criticized Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng’s press conference, where he declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted.
According to him, a person cannot be declared a fugitive when no formal charges have been filed against them.
In an interview on Adom FM’s Kasiebo Is Tasty during the midday news, he downplayed Mr. Agyebeng’s efficiency, lamenting his failure to conclusively prosecute any case since his appointment.
“He is more of a media person. He is not a serious practitioner. He only wanted to seek five minutes of media publicity,” he fumed.
Adofo expressed surprise over the declaration, arguing that Mr. Ofori-Atta had no reason to abandon his resources and assets to flee Ghana.
“I am surprised because there have been no formal charges, so why declare him wanted? You wrote to him, and if he is yet to honor the invitation, why take this step? He can come and tell you he has nothing to say—what can you do?” he quizzed.
He also criticized Mr. Agyebeng’s frequent press conferences, calling them a publicity stunt.
“This has always been the way of the OSP. The same thing happened with Charles Bissue, Col. Damoah (Rtd.), and even Cecilia Dapaah, whose house was found with millions. How did it end? He always declares people wanted, but what case has he prosecuted to the end?” he queried.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Agyebeng declared the former Minister a fugitive of justice, labeling him a suspect in four high-profile corruption investigations.
He stated that Mr. Ofori-Atta, who is reportedly in the United States for medical treatment, must return to Ghana immediately for interrogation.
Mr. Agyebeng further disclosed that the former Minister’s lawyers had expressed uncertainty about his return date but warned that failure to comply would lead to steps being taken to compel his return.
