The trial of the case involving Multimedia journalist Latif Iddrisu and the Inspector General of Police will resume today at a family court in Accra, eight years after the life-threatening assault on the journalist by some officers of the Ghana Police Service.
The resumption follows the successful adoption of the case by His Lordship Abass Abubakari Adams, the third judge to preside over the protracted case.
Latif Iddrisu was brutally assaulted while on duty by police officers at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in March 2017.
The police administration publicly stated that the CCTV cameras at the CID headquarters did not capture the assault on the night Iddrisu suffered a fractured skull when he was hit in the head with the butt of a gun.
The Police administration initially committed to compensating the journalist but later reneged on that promise, forcing Iddrisu and his employer, Multimedia Group Limited, to seek justice in court.
Eight years after sustaining the life-threatening injury as a result of the assault, Iddrisu, who has been undergoing medical treatment in California, USA, continues his fight for justice in court.
The Ghana Journalists Association has warned it will take the case to the ECOWAS court if significant progress is not made on Iddrisu’s case, as well as on the assassination of undercover journalist Ahmed Suale.
The long-term effects of the injury have significantly impacted Iddrisu’s career and personal life, as reported by his colleagues and close associates.
Senior State Attorney Nancynetta Twumasi Asiamah is expected to cross-examine the journalist when the case is called today.
