Land litigation stifles development of tourism in Hohoe

-

The Hohoe Municipal Assembly is gearing up to revive a vigorous tourism industry in the area.

The Assembly which is home to many tourist attractions; notable, the Wli Water Falls, among others, is looking for ways to rake up revenue generation with a renewed focus on tourism.

The Municipal Chief Executive for the Area, Teddy Ofori, speaking to Joy News about the motivation behind the Assembly’s intention noted that his outfit saw the need to improve upon revenue to aid development and open up the area to investors.

This comes days after the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture disclosed the Ministry’s intention to formulate a Legislative Instrument (LI) to regulate tourist sites across the country.

Mr. Ofori says the Assembly will set up sub-committees whose special focus will be on tourism in the area.

The Sector Minister, Mrs. Cathrine Abelema Afeku said the LI which is termed the Regulations of Tourist Attractions and Site; is aimed at putting all tourist sites and attractions under the Ghana Tourism Authority for proper regulation. Mrs. Afeku said until all tourist sites and attractions come under one umbrella, which would have the mandate to manage and take care of revenue allocation, it would be very difficult to control and regulate activities.

Mr. Teddy however, revealed that the development of the sector has been hit by several land litigation over some of the tourist sites.

He said some of the cases through an intervention are being solved arbitrarily whiles negotiations are also ongoing to hand over some of the sites to Private developers to ensure proper revenue generation and payment of royalties to the communities in which they operate.
