Lamisi Akanvariba condemns military brutality in Bawku, calls for swift action

Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, the Minister of State for Public Sector Reforms, has strongly condemned the actions of military personnel following the alleged brutalization of residents in Bawku.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, when soldiers from the 11th Mechanized Battalion reportedly stormed homes in Bawku during curfew hours.

According to reports, residents were severely beaten, and several properties were destroyed in what was described as a retaliatory operation after unidentified gunmen killed a soldier on Monday, March 17, 2025.

In response to the incident, the Member of Parliament for Tempane has called for swift action against the perpetrators and for the Ghana Armed Forces to provide compensation and support to the victims and their families.

Akanvariba denounced the recurring instances of military brutality, emphasizing that the primary duty of the armed forces is to protect citizens, not harm them.

She called on state institutions to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and implement concrete measures to prevent future occurrences.
