The ‘Derby Barceloni’ between FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol is the pick of Matchday 12 fixtures in the 2024-25 La Liga.
Barcelona and Espanyol will renew their rivalry with a clash at the Lluis Company’s Olympic Stadium late on Sunday afternoon, with the former club looking to build on their strong start to the season, while the latter will be chasing a positive result to keep themselves clear of the relegation battle.
This clash will bring about a reunion of friends Dani Olmo (Barca) and Javi Puado (Espanyol). The two played together in Barcelona’s youth ranks and in the Spanish Olympic team that won the silver medal in Tokyo 2020.
“We have been roommates, we have gone on holiday together, we are good friends. I am sure we will see each other a lot this year but on the day of the derby… Knife between the teeth [laughs]. I am happy for him, I know he was looking forward to returning home,” said Puado of Olmo.
Another intriguing clash on the menu sees champions Real Madrid head to the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday night for a clash with Valencia. Los Che have endured a miserable start to the season and desperately need an inspiring performance against Los Blancos to ignite their campaign and drag them away from trouble.
“People want us to leave everything on the pitch, to run, to fight, for us to realise what team we are representing. In that aspect, I think they will leave happy, because they have seen that fighting, generous team. This is the way to go. I have no doubt that this way we will get victories,” said Valencia forward Diego Lopez.
The round gets going on Friday night with Deportivo Alaves hosting Mallorca in the Basque region, heavyweights Atletico Madrid will be in action on Sunday afternoon when they welcome Las Palmas to the Metropolitano Stadium, and the closer on Monday evening pits Celta Vigo against Getafe at the Abanca-Balaidos Stadium.
