La Liga Preview: Athletic Bilbao host Getafe as Real Madrid travel to Mallorca

-

Starting from this week, football is back with the 2024/25 season and GOtv will be bringing you the live action from La Liga to keep you entertained. Real Madrid won the title for a record 36th time last season, will they continue their reign, or will they be dethroned?

In the very first match in this round of fixtures, Getafe will make a trip to the San Mames Stadium to take on Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, 15 August. Bilbao had a decent season and even picked up silverware last time out as they won the Copa del Rey. But now the team has a new task on their hands – trying to keep Nico Williams at the club.

The player was instrumental in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and several big clubs in Europe are after his signature according to the rumor mill. Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte even went as far as releasing a statement to address the issue.

“Nico is very committed to Athletic Bilbao. He has been subjected to a bombardment of questions about his future in an excessive and uncontrolled manner while on international duty at Euro 2024,” he said. “The Spanish Federation does not know how to protect him.” Is Williams going to stay at the club or will a shocking move take place before the transfer window closes?

Later in the evening, all eyes will be on Real Betis as they take on Girona at the Benito Villamarin Stadium. The action will continue Friday, 16 August as Celta Vigo goes up against Alaves and Las Palmas take on Sevilla.

Saturday’s headliner will be Barcelona playing against Valencia as the Catalan club regroups for this season. Hansi Flick has taken over from Xavi as the head coach and there’s plenty at stake. “I could feel it from the first second, this is an unbelievable club,” the former Bayern Munich and Germany coach said. “It is an amazing club, very big, bigger than I imagined. For me, it’s one of the biggest clubs, maybe the biggest club. To win titles, you can only really win with the biggest clubs, which is why I am here.” Do you think Flick can deliver the title for Barcelona at the end of this season?
