Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, George Afriyie, has suggested that Kwesi Appiah could be open to coaching the Black Stars again in the future.
Afriyie’s comments follow Sudan’s 2-0 victory over Ghana in the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, played on Tuesday at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.
The Sudanese team now managed by Appiah, previously held the Black Stars to a goalless draw in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium last Thursday.
With the win, Sudan is now well-positioned to secure a spot in the tournament, which will be hosted in Morocco next year. They currently sit second in Group F with seven points.
Speaking on Appiah’s success with the Sudanese national team, Afriyie believes that the former Black Stars coach is working to strengthen his coaching credentials by aiming to qualify for AFCON and also hoping to lead a team to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2026, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Afriyie also predicted that, Appiah could be open to returning for a third spell as Black Stars coach if the opportunity arises.
“Kwesi Appiah wants to better his CV by qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, and someday, when the Black Stars coaching position is vacant, he will be considered,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM‘s Ultimate Sports Show.
Currently, Sudan leads Group B in the World Cup qualifiers with 10 points, remaining undefeated.
They will complete their AFCON qualifiers next month with matches against Niger and Angola before shifting their focus to the World Cup qualifiers in March next year.
