Kwesi Appiah explains decision behind his appointment as Head of Sporting Affairs of Asante Kotoko

Kwesi Appiah has clarified the reasons behind his appointment as the Head of Sporting Affairs for Asante Kotoko.

After the dissolution of Dr Kwame Kyei’s board and Nana Yaw Amponsah’s management team, the life patron of the club, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II announced an Interim Management Committee (IMC) with Kwesi Appiah being named as the club’s technical director.

However, a club announcement in November stated that former coach and club legend Malik Jabir had taken over the technical director role.

Prosper Narteh Ogum, who had been part of the IMC, was also relieved of his additional duties and now focuses solely on his position as head coach.

In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Appiah explained the changes.

He admitted that while he had initially accepted the technical director position, his commitments as head coach of the Sudanese national team made it difficult for him to fulfil the role properly.

“We wanted Prosper Narteh Ogum to concentrate on the team and that was why Malik Jabir was appointed. I was the technical director but I am mostly away and we needed someone to come in as soon as possible who help the coach,” he said.

“The truth is that I did not deserve the technical directorship of Asante Kotoko due to my work with Sudan so we all agreed that let us bring in Malik Jabir because he has coached the various national teams,” he added.

Appiah also hinted at the future appointment of an assistant technical director.

“He [Malik Jabir] is a former player and he is willing to do that work. He is willing to travel with the team and for the games that he cannot travel with the team, his assistant will join the team and assist Prosper Nartey Ogum,” he added.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko is set to face their fierce rivals, Hearts of Oak, in the Matchday 13 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.
