Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has warned about the potential risks of mishandling the national team’s captaincy situation, stressing that disunity could affect performance.
His comments follow Ghana’s decision to rotate captains during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers before officially appointing Jordan Ayew as skipper for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar later this month.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Appiah emphasized the need for harmony within the squad.
“The little advice I can give is that I hope what I’ve heard about them trying to resolve the captaincy issue is true. If they can sort it out, given the quality of players we have, we should ensure there are no divisions within the team. Without unity, you cannot achieve anything,” he stated.
Appiah, who previously handled a similar situation, removed Asamoah Gyan as captain ahead of the 2019 AFCON, a decision that led Gyan to temporarily retire from international football. However, he reversed the decision after intervention from then-President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Meanwhile, Ghana, currently second in Group I with nine points, will face Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT, before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.
