Traders at the Kwadaso Wood Market in the Ashanti Region are calling on authorities to intervene in the high cost of securing stalls following the redevelopment of the market.
According to the affected traders, a space at the market, which was recently destroyed by fire, is being sold for GHS 4,000—a price they consider too high given their financial struggles after the disaster.
The market has suffered two fire outbreaks within a short period, with the first occurring on January 5 and another just two weeks later.
Due to the presence of highly flammable materials, including wood, sawdust, and chemicals used in timber processing, the fire spread rapidly, causing extensive damage to businesses.
Many traders say they are still struggling to recover from their losses and cannot afford the new stall fees.
They are, therefore, urging authorities to step in and provide financial relief or reduce the cost of reconstruction to help them rebuild their businesses.
