Kurt Okraku must resign if Ghana fails to qualify for 2025 AFCON – Kudjoe Fianoo

Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo, has called for Kurt Okraku to step down from his position as President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) if Ghana fails to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana faces a precarious situation in its AFCON qualification campaign after a series of poor results in Group F, leaving the Black Stars winless after four matches.

To secure qualification, Ghana must win its upcoming games against Angola (away) and Niger (home), while hoping that Sudan loses its remaining matches.

In an interview with Delali Atiase of Luv FM, Fianoo, the former CEO of Ashgold SC, emphasized that Okraku should not continue leading Ghanaian football if the team fails to qualify.

“In a few days, we will know our fate regarding whether we will play in AFCON or not. For the past 20 years, AFCON qualification was automatic for Ghana, even with credible contenders in our group,” he remarked.

He noted that the expansion of AFCON to 24 teams should make qualification easier, yet Ghana finds itself struggling. “If they fail to qualify for AFCON, I don’t know if there’s a greater failure than that, which is why they need to eat humble pie and resign. In five years, we’ve changed about six coaches—what’s the reason we’re still not performing?” Fianoo questioned.

Fianoo argued that the current FA leadership has failed to deliver on its mandate if Ghana misses the tournament, an outcome that hasn’t occurred in two decades.

“Having gone to AFCON in Cameroon and Ivory Coast without advancing beyond the group stage, if these are our metrics, then there’s nothing positive to show. Just look at the investment poured into all these failures. Ghana, a third-world country struggling economically, is spending significant resources only to receive these poor results. If you expect us to applaud, then I’m sorry,” he asserted.
