Kurt Okraku calls for protection for match officials, condemns hooliganism

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has strongly condemned the acts of hooliganism that marred the country’s football scene last season, urging for better protection of match officials.

Previous seasons saw several incidents of hooliganism in Ghanaian football, leading to sanctions against clubs like Bofoakwa Tano and RTU. Some match officials were even attacked by fans at various stadiums.

Speaking at a press conference in Sunyani on Friday, Mr Okraku emphasized the need to eliminate violence from football, regardless of any mistakes made by referees.

“Under no circumstances should a referee lose his life for making an incorrect decision,” Okraku stated.

He urged all stakeholders to prioritize the integrity of the sport.

“Let’s remove hooliganism in any form from our game. The product is supreme. We must protect it” Okraku said.

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League is set to commence on September 6, with the Division One League starting on September 27.
